Welcome to the Department of English
Established in 1969, the Department of English, University of Calicut, has come to be recognized as a major academic centre for studies in English language and literature in Kerala.
While maintaining the best traditions of English teaching and research in India, the Department has kept itself up to date with the latest developments in literature, linguistics and associated disciplines and has introduced to the postgraduate curriculum new areas of studies in keeping with the changing requirements of the times. A major goal of the Department is a fundamental redefining of the role of English and literary studies in the Indian context, through collaborative and interdisciplinary course contents and pedagogy. . In addition to streamlining content areas and courses of an established nature, a number of new focus areas have been identified and courses introduced in them to ensure contemporary academic relevance, interdisciplinarity, and better career prospects for the students.

A DAY WITH MVN
A programme was organised on 30th August 2022 as a tribute to Prof. M.V. Narayanan (MVN), Vice Chancellor, University of Sanskrit, Kalady who was relieved from the Department of English, University of Calicut on 8 March 2022. Ms Asha M., a student of IV semester M.A. English Programme, anchored the event and welcomed the gathering. The former Head of the Department, Prof. M.Abdul Jaleel graced the occasion. Prof. Janaky Sreedharan, Head of the Department, inaugurated the programme. She sang a melodious song and shared an anecdote revealing her first acquaintance with MVN 45 years ago. The student representatives Sreeshma K.Venu, Arundhathi Nair and Archana shared their valuable classroom experiences with MVN quoting examples from the literary texts and the characters he dealt with. In his inspiring reply speech, Prof M.V Narayanan spoke about his passion for teaching. Dr Sajitha M.A., the coordinator of the programme, proposed vote of thanks and also shared her experience of being a student of MVN in the late 1990s. After the formal ceremony, the students organised cultural programmes which were a feast for the eyes.
