Seminar on “Cultural Studies in the Kerala Context: The Emerging Horizons.”
The Department of English organised a two-day National Seminar (23-24 February 2022) in honour of the retiring professor Dr. M.V. Naryanan, an eminent teacher and one of the pioneers of cultural studies in Kerala. The seminar was titled “Cultural Studies in the Kerala Context: The Emerging Horizons.” The seminar mapped the historical trajectory of Cultural Studies as an academic discipline in Kerala universities, its contemporary relevance and the future prospects. The programme featured academics from around the country including internationally acclaimed scholars like Dr. Udaya Kumar (Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi) and Meena T. Pillai (University of Kerala). Topics in the seminar covered a wide range of issues like the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in cultural canons, the institution of slavery in pre-independent Kerala, digital travel discourses, emerging gender perceptions, digital humanities, print culture in Kerala etc. Being one of the first offline events in the University after the Covid-19 shutdown, the event attracted a huge number of participants from academic institutions around the state.
