Welcome to the Department of English
Established in 1969, the Department of English, University of Calicut, has come to be recognized as a major academic centre for studies in English language and literature in Kerala.
While maintaining the best traditions of English teaching and research in India, the Department has kept itself up to date with the latest developments in literature, linguistics and associated disciplines and has introduced to the postgraduate curriculum new areas of studies in keeping with the changing requirements of the times. A major goal of the Department is a fundamental redefining of the role of English and literary studies in the Indian context, through collaborative and interdisciplinary course contents and pedagogy. . In addition to streamlining content areas and courses of an established nature, a number of new focus areas have been identified and courses introduced in them to ensure contemporary academic relevance, interdisciplinarity, and better career prospects for the students.

Seminar on “Cultural Studies in the Kerala Context: The Emerging Horizons.”
The Department of English organised a two-day National Seminar (23-24 February 2022) in honour of the retiring professor Dr. M.V. Naryanan, an eminent teacher and one of the pioneers of cultural studies in Kerala. The seminar was titled “Cultural Studies in the Kerala Context: The Emerging Horizons.” The seminar mapped the historical trajectory of Cultural Studies as an academic discipline in Kerala universities, its contemporary relevance and the future prospects. The programme featured academics from around the country including internationally acclaimed scholars like Dr. Udaya Kumar (Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi) and Meena T. Pillai (University of Kerala). Topics in the seminar covered a wide range of issues like the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in cultural canons, the institution of slavery in pre-independent Kerala, digital travel discourses, emerging gender perceptions, digital humanities, print culture in Kerala etc. Being one of the first offline events in the University after the Covid-19 shutdown, the event attracted a huge number of participants from academic institutions around the state.

RESEARCH FORUM
The Research Forum is a space for the students to gain exposure to new avenues of research. It also provides a platform for budding scholars to present their novel and innovative ideas. The CoviD-19 pandemic proved to be a blessing in disguise as we switched over to the online mode, thus overcoming the hurdles of distance that had been a limitation earlier. Scholars and experts from various parts of India and even from abroad participated and shared their thoughts and work in the relevant areas. Since the sessions were recorded and uploaded on YouTube, anyone with an interest in the relevant area can watch the talks and give feedback. The Research Forum is a part of the curriculum of the Department and is held every Wednesday (except on Public Holidays or during Examinations).
